SMART Targets Improvement Task: Emotional Engagement

I have decided that emotional engagement is something I need to improve on within my performance. I plan to do this by watching other performances of this song and then discuss how they were effective in portraying their emotion to the audience.

Performances I watched:

In all of these performances, they portray the character as very vulnerable and emotionally defeated. This is Joseph's weakest moment in the play and he is very closed off in his physicality throughout the majority of the song until the end, where he becomes much more open and he straightens his posture and in some cases the actors almost puff out their chests once Joseph has found a new vein of hope and determination.

During the beginning of the performances, the vocals of each performer begin very quiet and airy with very little power, however they crescendo over the performance with the vocals in the final chorus having much more power to them. However the ending of the song differs in many performances, some belt the final note whereas others have a very sudden diminuendo and let the vocals fade quietly out. I have chosen to fade the vocals out quietly as I am more confident and comfortable doing this. There are also moments within all the versions where the actors add small amounts of sobbing to their vocals to further convey Joseph's deflated and emotionally vulnerable feeling in this song.

Joseph also always seems to start on the floor and through the performance he begins to rise through the levels until he is standing to show his development and his determination as the song progresses.
